X$D Ultra® Motor Provides Design Strength and Energy Efficiency in a Powerful Motor

Fort Wayne, IN — GE Motors, part of GE Consumer & Industrial, introduces its X$D "Extra Severe Duty" Ultra® motor, featuring National Electrical Manufacturers Association NEMA Premium® efficiency and an industrial strength design that helps to lower annual energy costs and extends motor life without sacrificing performance.

With its low temperature rise and low vibration, the X$D Ultra® motor is perfect for harsh environments involving highly corrosive materials or where processes place high structural demands on motors, such as in the oil, gas, energy and chemical industries. The new motor is a TEFC (Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled) industrial AC motor ranging from one to 300 horsepower. It meets and/or exceeds NEMA Premium Nominal efficiency standards, which can reduce energy consumption.

NEMA Premium® efficiency
The X$D Ultra® motor meets or exceeds all NEMA Premium nominal efficiencies and exceeds all NEMA Premium minimum guaranteed efficiencies. The energy savings make the motor better for the environment than less energy–efficient standard motors.

In fact, electric motor systems account for 23 percent of all electricity consumed in the U.S. and almost 70 percent of the manufacturing sector's electricity consumption (Motors Matter, www.motorsmatter.org). By replacing just one 100 horsepower, 1,800 revolutions–per–minute (RPM), pre–EPAct motor that runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week with GE's X$D Ultra, a manufacturer could save enough energy to power two U.S. households for more than a year. And, if three–quarters of U.S. industrial users replaced one 100 horsepower, 1,800 RPM, pre–EPAct motor with GE's X$D Ultra, it would eliminate greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 20 tons per year.

X$D Ultra improved customer operating performance also includes:

  • Substantially lower vibration levels than required by NEMA and IEEE 841 standards, leading to longer bearing life.
  • Operation, on average, 40 percent cooler than NEMA Class B (80 degrees Celsius rise) insulation standards, leading to longer electrical and mechanical life.
  • Return on investment through energy savings in 1.5 years if used to replace an equivalent pre–EPAct motor.
  • Cost savings of more than $31,700 in total life cycle costs compared to a pre–EPAct motor.
Durable design
One of a motor's most critical components is its bearing system. The Six Star Bearing System™ and a low overall vibration of 0.04 ips (inches per second) ensure the motor operates smoothly. These features, along with its sealed re–greasable system, allow for easy maintenance while protecting and lubricating the bearings. In addition, the motor's external fan is corrosion resistant and offers exceptional cooling, which adds to the bearings' durability and longevity. The recessed steel–reinforced neoprene shaft slinger also provides bearing system protection.

Enhancing the motor's reputation for toughness is its cast–iron construction, including the frame, conduit box, end shields and fan cover. Class H insulation materials protect critical components from heat, also contributing to longer life. GEGARD2000® is a specially designed insulation system that protects motors from voltage spikes up to 2000v when used with an IGBT drive. This exceeds NEMA MG1 Part 31 requirements. And, for peace–of–mind, every motor is backed with a 36–month in–service or 42–month from date of manufacturing warranty, whichever comes first, for both mechanical and efficiency performance.
