GE Produces First T8 High Output Cinema Linear Fluorescent Lamp for Entertainment Industry

CLEVELAND—GE Consumer & Industrial continues to create innovative products for the cinematography linear fluorescent lamp category with the introduction of the industry's first T8 High Output Cinema Linear Fluorescent Lamp. The film–friendly SHOWBIZ® T8 High Output Cinema Linear Fluorescent lamp expands fixture design possibilities while providing high light output, compact shape, color stability and GE reliability. It is meant to replace less–efficient T12 cinematography linear fluorescent lamps in film, TV and still photography applications.

"Imagine the possibilities for greater light output when using 1–inch T8s instead of 1.5–inch T12s," says Nick Iacobucci, SHOWBIZ® cinema fluorescent product manager. "Twelve of our film–friendly T8 High Output Cinema Linear Fluorescent lamps fit in a space—a fixture—that previously could only hold eight T12 lamps. Same space, more light. Film–friendly SHOWBIZ® T8 High Output Cinema Linear Fluorescent lamps provide more lumens and are more efficient than standard T12 cinematography linear fluorescent lamps. The color emissions of the SHOWBIZ® T8 High Output Cinema Linear Fluorescent lamp respond to the spectral sensitivity curves of film and electronic imaging media, eliminating the green spikes common with older or less advanced products.

Performance achievements of the lamp include:

  • Colors that match tungsten (3200 degrees Kelvin) and daylight (5500 degrees Kelvin) reference spectra for film;
  • 90 percent lumen maintenance over 2000 hours of service for brightness stability;
  • 95 color–rendering index on the 3200K color and 97 color–rendering index on the 5500K color with the use of rare–earth and full–spectrum phosphors;
  • Dimmable on ANSI–approved dimming systems; and
  • Smaller lamp diameter allows fixture manufacturers to put more lamps in same space.

The SHOWBIZ® T8 High Output Cinema Linear Fluorescent lamp is also available with GE's industry leading covRguard® shatter resistant shield for stage and studio operations that use open light banks, move lamps around on sets or transport lamps for location shooting. The exclusive covRguard® Lexan® shield, available only on GE lamps, offers industry–leading shatter resistance and containment of broken glass.
