It's Spring Cleaning Time for Arcadia Community Center!
Over 100 GE volunteers to renovate, paint and landscape facility
Louisville, KY, May 11, 2007—Spring has finally arrived, Derby visitors have left and around Louisville, residents are taking a break to stop and smell the roses. But at Arcadia Community Center, the smell of new paint, fresh mulch and just–cut lumber is in the air!
On Friday, May 11, Arcadia Community Center (1423 Arcade Ave.) received a much–needed facelift through the hard work of over 100 volunteers from GE Consumer & Industrial's Technology team. And thanks to a generous $5,000 grant from the Electric Insurance Company, the GE volunteers were able to purchase the needed supplies and equipment to make the Arcadia Community Center shine like it's brand–new again!
Arcadia Community Center (ACC) was founded in 2000 to provide both youth and adult services to residents of Louisville's South End, with a strong emphasis on after-school youth learning and activities programs. Serving a largely immigrant and racially diverse community, ACC runs summer camps, after–school programs and early childhood development programs for children. ACC also provides translation/interpretation services, job placement services and English as a second language classes for adults.
"The work that GE is doing for our Center makes a significant difference in our ability to provide services and to be an engaging gathering spot for the residents in Arcadia," said Katie Carman, Director of the Arcadia Community Center. "The Arcadia staff, residents, and Board members are extremely grateful for the chance to be rewarded with their efforts."
The GE volunteers will plunge right in and get their hands dirty to provide a little elbow grease while revitalizing the facility. Planned activities include building a handicap ramp to make the facility accessible; constructing walkways; tiling and carpeting floors; landscaping the grounds; painting murals; installing new appliances and generally completing a deep cleaning of the entire Center.
"As organizer of this year's GE Technology project, I'm overwhelmed with the excitement and desire from our engineers to give back to the community. They are able to take the hard work they put into appliances every day and translate that same effort into this project. We are pleased to be helping the Arcadia Community Center who provides a much–needed service to the community." Scott Welham, Refrigeration Technology General Manager.
